Licensing Requirements to Work in Cosmetology
Students interested in becoming cosmetologist are required to complete a state licensing exam. Obtaining a license typically entails attending a state-certified school in which you will learn basic training in makeup application, manicures, massage therapy, skincare treatment, styling, safety procedures, and business management. Cosmetology programs can range from 1,400 and 1,600 hours and may be completed within one to two years of attending classes as a full time student. It is also common for schools to offer evening classes so students can continue working while completing these programs.
The projected job growth rate of a licensed cosmetologist is 13% between the years of 2012 and 2022 and the median annual salary of a cosmetologist in 2013 was $23,140 according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
