Hairstyling and Barbering are a booming industry right now. No matter where the economy stands, you can almost always count on people continuing to receive, at minimum, the most basic of hair care needs. As a barber/hairstylist you will play a major role in achieving and maintaining a costumer’s desired look.
Potential hairstylist and barber students will need to complete cosmetology courses through a state-approved program. Once the program has been completed you will then take a state licensing exam as the final step in becoming a licensed hairstylist or licensed barber. Full time programs can last at least 9 months and can often lead to an associate’s degree in cosmetology. Once you become licensed you can choose to further your education by taking advanced courses in hairstyling or barbering which may help put you above other potential employees when applying for a job.
The employment outlook of barbers and hairdressers is projected to grow 13 percent from 2012 to 2022. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) the median annual salary for hairdressers and barbers is $23,140 in May of 2013 with the highest salaries being reported as more than $35,000.
