You may often hear about medical billing and coding classes being offered online. You may have even heard how it is a great job for those who need to work from home.  Medical billing and coding can be done from a doctor's

office or from home. You can even find most medical billing and coding training classes online so you can study at your own pace. This is a great way for working adults to learn a new skill or change career paths.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics does not have medical billing and coding classified as its own occupation. You can find it listed under either Medical Records and Health Information Technician or Medical Assistant. If you work in a medical office, depending upon the size of the practice, you may be classified as a Medical Assistant. They are responsible for front desk tasks as well as the records and billing tasks. They may even be responsible for some of the nurse type duties such as weight and blood pressure of incoming patients.

If you work in a much larger doctor's office, hospital, or from home, you will more likely be classified as the medical records and health information technician. This occupation is responsible for keeping patient information organized and coded properly for the insurance company to reimburse the doctor's office.

Medical Billing and Coding Schools

Many medical billing and coding schools are completely online. In order to get into this field you do need to have a certification from one of these medical billing and coding schools online. There are some colleges that offer these programs in a classroom on campus, but the majority are online. Many of these training programs can be completed in less than a year. This time frame may depend upon the school curriculum and your pace of study. Many of the courses you may be required to take for this program are:

  • The electronic medical record is now mandatory for all doctors and hospitals. As these records are transferred over, billing and coding experts will likely be able to work more from home than ever before. They will also be required to continue their education as the medical technology and coding systems grow and change.

    Salary and Job Opportunities

    This position can be very rewarding, as you are the liaison between the doctor and the insurance companies. You are helping the patients pay for the care they need. As with most healthcare positions, this is not a position that is likely to go away anytime soon. As medical technology increases and lifespans increase, medical industry workers of all kinds are in demand.  The median salary for a records technician in 2010 was $32,350 per year or $15.55 per hour. Completion of a certification course is required for entry level positions. This position is expected to grow by 21% or 38,000 jobs by 2020 due to the higher demand for healthcare services.
